Migrants Gender 16 9 Eng 2

What are the key challenges faced by Ukrainian migrants forced to leave their homes due to the war? How will their experience in Europe influence their decision to return? And do men and women adapt to life abroad in the same way?

The Oleksandr Razumkov Ukrainian Centre for Economic and Political Studies, with the support of ISAR Ednannia under the Ukraine Civil Society Sectoral Support Activity, explored the gender-specific aspects of war-induced migration. According to UN data, over 6 million Ukrainians have relocated to Europe, with the majority settling in Poland, Germany, and the Czech Republic. Most migrants (70%) are women with children and the elderly. The research reveals that women face greater challenges in adapting to their new environments, dealing with language barriers, employment issues, and limited access to healthcare and housing. Meanwhile, men find it comparatively easier to enter the labor market and secure better working conditions.

Researchers highlight that Ukrainians highly value social security and access to free, quality education for children in Europe. Many wish to see these benefits implemented at home. However, the longer migrants remain abroad, the greater the risk that they may not return after the war. A key factor in determining their return will be the policies of the Ukrainian government and its ability to carry out effective reforms that create favorable conditions for their reintegration.
