At the Shelters of Kindness Charity Auction of Meeting, initiated by Caritas Ukraine, UAH 673,000 was raised to provide housing for elderly people affected by the war. Our contribution of UAH 21,000, donated during the auction to secure a meeting between participants of the 14th Civil Society Development Forum and renowned writer Oksana Zabuzhko, is our way of supporting this important cause. These funds will help ensure decent housing and care for elderly people who have suffered due to the war.

Stories That Need Support

Currently, 154 elderly people live in six shelters operated by the Caritas Ukraine network: in Boryslav, Ivano-Frankivsk, Kolomyia, Ternopil, Chortkiv, and Odesa. Most of them are internally displaced persons who are extremely vulnerable during wartime. Many are living alone and have disabilities or chronic illnesses.

These grandmothers and grandfathers once lived in their own homes in the east and south of Ukraine. The war has cruelly taken from them the right to live out their lives in peace and dignity, leaving them without shelter, familiar belongings, the strength to start over, and sometimes even without family. And yet, they have not lost hope or faith in the kindness of others.

Shelters of Kindness: Uniting Hearts for Humanity

The Shelters of Kindness Charity Auction of Meeting brought together opinion leaders, artists, entrepreneurs, and activists around the values of humanity, dignified aging, and honoring the life experience of older people. Among the participants was a true legend of Ukrainian literature, Oksana Zabuzhko, and we were proud to secure a meeting with her on behalf of the entire civil society sector.

We will meet her on December 5 at the 14th Civil Society Development Forum, where she will be the headliner.

The auction may be over, but the fundraising continues. The goal is to raise 2,000,000 UAH to support the shelters. You can still contribute to the Shelters of Kindness campaign.
